No one likes dry skin. However, depending on the weather and where you live, dry skin may be a daily issue that you have to deal with. Keeping your skin hydrated is the best way to retain smooth, supple skin texture that stays soft as a babys you-know-what. Believe it or not though, many people dont moisturize regularly, no matter how dry it is outside!

People living in desert areas should moisturize daily, as well as those living at high altitudes. Still, many people, mostly men, forego basic skin care rituals. Think about it. How often do you see a man rubbing lotion on his skin? Men should take just as much care to protect their skin from UV rays as women do, but that is often not the case. Its just not done. Still, men want to look good, and many of them dont realize that their refusal to moisturize will come back to haunt them as they begin to age. Like women, mens skin texture also loses elasticity and is also vulnerable to the types of skin conditions that plague many women, including acne, dry, itchy areas, spider veins, wrinkles and age spots.

Men need to start thinking about skin care in their teens, just like women. Protection against skin cancer is just as important for men to think about as it is for women, and yet they tend to shrug away such concerns, as if the sun is just going to magically reflect off their shoulders. When was the last time you told your man to moisturize? And if you did, do you remember his response? The best way to get men to take care of their skin, if they wont do it for themselves, is to do so silently. Look for creams and lotions that will appeal to his taste in both texture and scent, and above all, dont bug him about it. Thats a sure way to get him to ignore the entire issue. Place lotions or creams for men on the bathroom or kitchen counter, or better yet, his desk or beside his favorite chair. If he gives you the eye, just smile and offer a little shrug. Why honey, you want my skin nice and soft, dont you? Hey, it works both ways, ladies. Better yet, why not make it a ritual to moisturize his skin yourself if he balks. Its not likely that hell balk if you do it.

Dry skin plagues everyone, women, men and children. Always make sure that kids are properly protected with sunscreen that will help to prevent skin cancers when they reach adulthood. Studies have shown that one good sunburn as a teenager increases the risk of developing skin cancer as an adult by about 30 percent. So tell those guys to get over the macho bit and take care of themselves, because skin cancer knows no boundaries. Proper protection will not only prevent dry skin, but it may help to prevent serious other issues from cropping up as time goes by.br

For most issues related to teenagers, fads rule the roost. And skin care issues are highest among teenagers. Today any medium, be it magazines, newspapers, television or the Internet are inundated with skin care related articles. These articles could include various therapies and homemade solutions for skin care. Ranging from the totally natural to those which involve chemicals, these articles provide the reader with the much needed solutions to their skin related problems.

These days, the latest craze in skin care regimes is natural antioxidant skin care. The belief that is being popularized these days is that the more natural the product being used the more effective and devoid of side effects it will be. This concept has a strong historical background since it is a known fact that queens and princesses of the ages gone by used natural extracts of plants like hibiscus and olive to keep their skin glowing and youthful. Over time, man has processed these very elements and made them available to the common man in the form of tubes, bottles and cans containing moisturizers, creams, shampoos and anti-aging gels. These contain the richness of the abundant health secrets hidden in the flora and fauna of the jungles. The only difference is that they are more likely to have been processed in a research laboratory and tested before being presented to you for use.

These distilled ingredients used to a healthy body are being called nutriceuticals at large. This new addition to the dictionary is made up of the words nutrients and pharmaceutical.

Most companies which make skin care related products tout the goodness of antioxidants and natural products that contain antioxidants. An antioxidant is something that destroys the harmful oxygen free radicals. These free radicals could be a product of normal functioning of the body or could be generated due to external factors like ultraviolet rays from the sun.

Though the concept of free radicals is extremely complicated to explain, suffice it to know that these radicals can be harmful and can result in mutation in genes. Mutation can lead to skin cancer and make the individual incapable of repairing the damage done to the skin. With antioxidants we can limit the number of free radicals in our system, thereby ensuring that we not only keep our skin supple and glowing but also healthy. This wonderful discovery of how antioxidants can work to negate the effect of free radicals had led to fantastic products which can help in tackling issues related to ageing skin. Problems like wrinkles, spots, pigmentation and small growths can be resolved with increasing the amount of antioxidants in your diet and oral application of antioxidant concentrates./pbr

Natural skin care oils can replenish the skins moisture content, protect against damage from wind and the elements, soften, soothe and refresh. But, the terms used by cosmetic companies can be confusing. Hopefully, this article will clear up things up.

Many of the lotions and creams on the market contain essential oil. That term was created hundreds of years ago. It was used to describe distilled and concentrated plant fragrances that were said to convey the essence of the plant.

They are not oil-based. They are water-based. Lavender oil is one of the common examples. It smells nice, at first. But, when it is heavily concentrated, it causes drowsiness and moodiness. It irritates the throat and nasal membranes. It can cause allergic reactions when applied directly to the skin. Its best use is in aromatherapy, incense, candles or similar items. As a skincare ingredient, it is not the best choice.

Essential fatty acids are entirely different. They are one of the components of human sebum, the skins own oils secreted by the sebaceous glands. Many natural skin care oils contain essential fatty acids. Some that are most similar to human sebum, on a molecular level, are listed below, along with the benefits provided by each.

Shea butter, pressed from the nut of the Shea tree, beneficial for acne, eczema and psoriasis, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity
Avocado oil, pressed from the fleshy pulp surrounding the pit of the avocado, contains numerous nutrients including vitamin A and E, which are known to be beneficial to the skins health, shown in clinical trials to increase the amount of collagen in the skins layers
Grape seed oil, rich in vitamin E and other antioxidants, particularly beneficial for healing the area beneath the eyes
Babassu palm oil, helps to balance sebum production, preventing excessive oiliness or dryness

Any of those natural skin care oils can be used by everyone, regardless of their complexion type. It is only mineral oil and other petroleum-based products that cause greasiness and cannot be used by people with acne or a tendency to have pimples.

Petroleum-based oil is not similar to the sebum. It is not absorbed, clogs the pores and causes numerous problems with the skins health. If you have an oiler complexion, youll be safe if you avoid mineral oil, petrolatum and paraffin. Those are the most common culprits.

As you may have noticed, most natural skin care oils have antioxidant activity. That is important for anyone that wants to delay or reverse the signs of aging.

Free radical damage is one of the leading causes of wrinkles, sagging, age spots and similar problems. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals before they can damage the cellular membranes and fibers. Some antioxidants have been proven to reverse damage that has already occurred.

Coenzyme Q10, for example, is a unique antioxidant that is quickly depleted when the skin is exposed to UV rays from the sun. Natural skin care oils dont contain coenzyme Q10, but it can be added to them. If you want the most benefits, youll look for it on the label of ingredients.

A good skin care regimen is essential if you want your face to look its best. It is the base to your makeup and no matter how great the makeup is or how skilled you are at applying it, if your skin is lacking you are not going to look your best. Think of it in terms of building a house, if your dont have a solid foundation, it doesnt matter what you build on top, it may look okay in the beginning, but over time the wearing effect will ultimately show, and so will makeup piled on unhealthy skin.

So to start your mission of healthy, glowing skin, you first need to identify your skin type as well as any problem areas. The most common types are dry, oily, normal and combination. Acne, blackheads, flaky skin, dull lifeless skin, and large pores are just a few common skin problems. So like I said before, if you want to have healthy, vibrant skin you must first get to know your skin type, otherwise you may use incorrect products treating it and end up with undesirable results. See below a quick description of the most common types.

Oily is generally characterized as having an all over shiny or in severe cases greasy appearance. A common result from this is acne.

Normal is the ideal skin type. It has the perfect amount of oil to keep the skin hydrated so it isnt dry and tight, yet isnt too oily.

Combination can have a couple of different characteristics but generally is dry to normal on the cheeks and jaw line but oily from the forehead, straight down the nose and to the chin (also known as the T-Zone.)

Dry skin can be generally characterized a peeling or flaking of the skin. It can also have an overall tight and slightly irritated feeling to it. It is often splotchy.

An absolute factor in maintaining healthy skin is to hydrate! I know, big yawn right? Im sure youve heard this one a million times before, but seriously this is the foundation to great skin. If you take your foundation away everything will come crashing down or in this case your skin will come sagging down. Not only does water help flush out toxins and help eliminate dryness, it also helps to plump up the skin which helps fill in lines. The normal range for proper hydration is drinking 8 to 10, 8-ounce glasses of water a day. Distilled is the best because it is water at its purest. If you dont take in enough water your body will use what little you did take in for the more important functions in your body. Since vital organs take priority over your skin, your skin will be neglected unless you increase your intake of water.

Once you get hydration down, its time to start scraping away by exfoliating. Exfoliation is super important. Exfoliation is simply polishing your skin, by removing the dead skin. We all get a build up of dead skin cells on our faces; a huge build up can cause a dull, lifeless looking complexion. These pesky cells need to have some gentle assistance in coming off, simply washing your face will not remove them. There are some great scrubs that you can use once a week after washing your face. A scrub is similar to a cleanser except that it has a gritty sand-like substance mixed into it. This grittiness is what breaks away those dead skin cells. If your skin currently is suffering from a breakout, you may want to skip a gritty scrub, as this can irritate pimples, causing them to break open and potentially slow down their healing. Instead try a damp face cloth, rubbing it gently in circular motions all over your face. This will help in removing dead skin, without being as harsh as a scrub. This simple step can really get your skin glowing and improve its overall appearance.

For dry skin you want to cleanse your face with a cleansing cream. It is generally an oil-based cream that can be used to cleanse very dry or mature skin. Cold cream cleansers help replenish the moisture that your skin is missing. If you use a harsh cleanser designed for oily skin, you will actually be stripping away moisture, making your skins condition worse. You will want to follow this with a skin freshener. A freshener is a toner that is in its mildest form, with the alcohol content usually being 4% or less. This should be followed with a hydrating moisturizer, preferably one that contains sunscreen. Once a week (providing you are not allergic to it) you may want to apply a coating of pure honey onto your face and let dry for 10-15 minutes then rinse, this is very moisturizing for dry skin.

For normal to combination skin you want to cleanse your face with a cleansing lotion. This is a water-based cleanser that will remove make up and other impurities. Next you will use a toner, which contains and alcohol content of 4-15%. Then follow with a moisturizer for normal skin.

With oily skin you really have to pay attention because one wrong product can cause a mega-breakout. You will want to use a face wash to cleanse your skin; it should be oil free and geared towards removing excess oil. If your skin is acne prone you should look for a cleanser that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. This should be followed with an astringent, which contain the highest alcohol content up to 35%. Now the final step is to moisturize, I know youre thinking with oily skin that can be dangerous, but yes even your skin needs moisture. The key is finding an oil free moisturizer. Just like the other skin types you also need a sunscreen, just aim for one thats oil free.

A great add on to your skin care routine is a weekly mask. The two most common and useful are clay and mud. Clay is perfect for oily skin. It dries up excess oil and tightens up pores. On the other hand, mud is an ideal solution for dry, mature skin. It moisturizes and helps soften the appearance of wrinkles.

Ultimately good skin care lies in your own hands. This is just a quick overview to give you some basic knowledge to get you on your way. By treating your skin properly by its type you are allowing it to start to regenerate because it is getting the basic nourishment it needs. There are lots of other things that affect your skin, stress, pollution, diet, smoke, ect. Once you starting caring properly for your skin according to its skin type, you can then take it a more in depth level. You can start to examine more targeted treatments such as facials (these dont have to be pricey and can very easily be done at home), facial exercises and more.

After a busy day of work, raising children, and contact with harsh environmental conditions, our skin has been exposed to a lot of harmful elements. Over time this can result in damage to the skin and cause pre-mature aging. Because of the harm, it is important to take care of your skin. The benefits of a night skin care routine include improving skin tone and color, reducing skin blemishes, and hydrating and rejuvenating the skin. Establishing a night skin care routine will allow the skin to breathe, heal, and restore to a healthy young glow.

The following is a list of must-do tips for establishing a night care routine:

1. Makeup Remover: If you wear make up, the first step is to use a quality make-up remover to remove make up. This will ensure that all make up will be removed when you wash your face. Using an alcohol free toner will help restore the pH of the skin and remove any remaining oils and makeup. One can moisten a cotton ball and gently pat the toner over the face and neck.

2. Facial Cleanse: Use a quality cleanser to clean your face. Gently massage the cleanser into the skin. Wash your face and neck thoroughly with warm water and the cleanser. When you have completed the face cleansing, make sure that you rinse the entire residue off thoroughly. Using a cleanser will remove any dirt and debris in and on the skin. Warm water will open the pours to allow dirt and bacteria to be released. It is also recommended that you use an exfoliant that will penetrate deeper and help remove blackheads. Gently pat your face dry and then apply Tea Tree Oil to any acne or acne prone areas.

3. Eye Cream: Because there are no oil glands around the eye, using an eye cream on the skin around the eye will replenish the skin and reduce puffiness and dark circles. Gently apply the cream under and around the eye.

4. Lip Care: Gently wash your lips with warm water on a soft cloth. This will remove any dry and dead skin. Apply a lip balm to soften and heal chapped lips.

5. Moisturizer: Use a quality moisturizer that will not irritate the skin. An all natural organic moisturizer is a good choice because they do not contain any chemicals or harsh additives. The type of moisturizer you use will depend on your skin type such as dry, sensitive, or oily skin. A good moisturizer will remove debris, dead skin cells and pollutants, soothe and rejuvenate the skin, nourish the skin with vitamins and minerals, maintain normal ph levels, and help with cell regeneration. Using a quality Serum helps protect collagen, reduce redness and discoloration, and reduces age spots, fine lines, brown spots, and wrinkles Both serums and moisturizers help bring new cells to the surface revealing a smoother and softer complexion.

Establishing a nightly skin care routine will only take about five minutes of your time. Because everyone has their own specific skin type, it is important to use products that match your skins sensitivity. By implementing a nightly care routine, your skin will maintain a youthful appearance longer as well as staying smooth, soft, clear, and most importantly, healthy.

Today’s assault on our bodies

People react badly to the word chemical. We all know that allergies are on the increase and yet scientists are developing more and more chemicals. They are in airborne pesticides, in foods we eat and in just about everything we put on our skin. But it is not just man made chemicals that many of us are allergic to. Nature can be equally dangerous. We are becoming increasingly allergic to grasses, trees and flowers. We know this because some of us come out in rashes from lying in the grass and hay fever from flowers and trees is affecting more of us as is the natural poison in nuts and fish. Many of us are also allergic to some natural essences in perfume and creams.

But the complex world of perfumes has almost given up trying to explain itself – smells and bells, musical notes, molecules and lies. Mostly its the industry’s own fault for treating us all like idiots. Advertising is so full of rubbish it would be funny if it wasn’t so sad. Miraculous flowers that do not exist and confusion over terms such as wood essences and pink musk (true musk is now banned as it was extracted from the musk gland from deer). The role of chemists in cosmetics now seems to be reduced to change for changes sake. Their abilities in changing molecular structures is almost miraculous and a huge mystery to most of us. But do we as women want this? Why make up new scents when we have all the lovely traditional perfumes such as Lavender, Geranium, Patchouli, Lemon, Rose, Jasmine that our grandparents loved.

Which brings me to essential oils. These are pure plant, flower or tree extracts, uncontaminated with chemicals and ideally grown under organic conditions. In other words they are natural. Without these essential oils the medical, food and cosmetics industries would not exist. Many essential oils are the main ingredients in drugs prescribed by our orthodox western system of medicine. For example the latest swine flu antidote Tamiflu contains Star Anise, a herb mostly used in Chinese duck and pork dishes. But this time let’s talk about essential oils used mostly in the cosmetics industry. Here are some of my favourites.

Essential oils for our face

Chamomile is a herb grown in England, France, Hungary and Bulgaria. My favourite Chamomile is Chamomile Roman. It is used in pharmaceutics where it is beneficial for nerves, migraine, acne, inflammation, insomnia, menstrual problems, dermatitis eczema, and burns. In cosmetics it is good for normal skin for psoriasis, broken capillaries, combination skin which are both dry and oily in different parts of the body. I have found a night cream which contains chamomile and I like the smell and find it very relaxing.

Cypress oil comes from the leaves and twigs from a tree, grown in the Mediterranean. It is a revitalising astringent as well as good for broken capillaries. It is particularly effective on oily skin. Although this is effective in a facial cream or oil you could also put a few drops in warm water. I also use it in a foot cream combined with Rosemary and English peppermint. In just a few days I found a huge improvement to my dry and cracked feet. I find it very healing and it feels cool and fresh.

Geranium oil comes from the leaves, stalks and flowers of the Geranium plant and is grown in France, Egypt, China, Morocco and USSR. It is used in perfumes, cosmetics and the pharmaceutical industry’s. It is good for normal skin, combination skin (oily and dry), it is also good for broken capillaries. I use it in a hand and body cream I found which also contains gorgeous Patchouli.

Rose oil comes from a bush and is made from the flower petals. The best essential oils come from Bulgaria and Morocco. It is used mostly in the perfumery and cosmetics industry. It is good for normal skin and is often found in day creams. It is good for broken capillaries, combination skin as well as being revitalising. It is also one of the most expensive essential oils on the market.

Carrot oil is a root vegetable grown in various places including the UK. It is used in many moisturising and day and night creams. It has most of the qualities mentioned in the above as well as a rich Vitamin A content (also known as Ritalin in the cosmetics industry).

Lavender oil comes from the flowers of the Lavender bush and is grown in France yet English Lavender is becoming more and more popular. I love its perfume although younger people often associate it with Grandma but believe me when I say that Granny new best! It is used for normal skin, psoriasis, combination skin, its an organic sunscreen, good for burns, as an insect repellent, can be used on stings neat as well as relaxing and smells gorgeous. I found a day cream with Vitamin A and E with touch on lavender and my skin looks and feels younger and clearer.

All of the above oils can be used in face creams, but pure essential oils should never be used undiluted apart from Lavender.

Essential oils for the body

Clary Sage is a herb that comes from France, Spain and USSR and it is used in the pharmaceutical, perfumery and cosmetics industries. I use it in a aluminium free deodorant for its antibacterial qualities combined with Lemon, Tea Tree, Rosemary and Cypress. It works for me.

Rosemary is a herb that come from Spain, France and Japan. The oil comes from the flowers and the leaf. It is mostly used in the pharmaceutical and the veterinary worlds. Its uses are numerous from headaches to skin infections.

Patchouli is a plant and is grown in China, Indonesia and Japan. Its oil comes from the leaves and is mostly used in perfumes and cosmetics although it has lots of medical qualities. It is helpful for skin inflammation, acne, eczema, dandruff and as an antiseptic, but because of its gorgeous perfume it is mostly used in the perfume and cosmetics industries. I love the smell. Its also unisex, men like it, I think it reminds them of leather as it was used to cure leather coats in the 60′s. I have found a gorgeous hand and foot cream mixed with Geranium and Patchouli.

Peppermint is a herb and the oil comes from the whole plant. English Peppermint is now used in chocolate, whilst the other Peppermints go into toothpaste etc. It can be grown in our gardens and is used as a tea for indigestion but it is good for arthritis, migraine, inflammation, nausea and many more ailments. I use it in a foot cream. I love its smell on my tired feet and I know that its an excellent stimulant along with Rosemary and Cypress.

These are just a few essential oils that I use as part of my natural skincare regime, but there are about 300 others out there and we are learning more about them everyday and about their miraculous benefits.
